Dr Donald Hunt OBE

Sad news has come in from Worcester of the death on Saturday 4 August of Dr Donald Hunt OBE, Cathedral Organist there from 1975 until 1996 and Conductor of eight Worcester Three Choirs Festivals.

Besides his conducting and choral training endeavour, Dr Hunt’s knowledge of the choral music of Elgar was unequalled and a new anthology of Elgar Church Music was issued by the London house of Cramer as recently as last year. Dr Hunt was also responsible for the extensive volume of Elgar’s Part Songs in the Complete Elgar Edition published in 2014. On retirement from the Cathedral, Dr Hunt was for some years Principal of the Elgar School of Music in Worcester and conductor of the Elgar Chorale. Prior to his Worcester appointments, he held office here at the Minster as Organist and Choirmaster from 1957 to 1975, having moved to Leeds from St John’s Torquay. His family roots were in Gloucester where he was born and joined the Cathedral Choir as a boy, later becoming Dr Sumsion’s assistant organist. All at the Minster send their special wishes and prayers to Jo and all the Hunt family. There will be a memorial Evensong probably in the Autumn, of which details will be available later.
