On Sunday 19th June the Minster hosted a civic service to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War, to remember those who fought and died in the conflict, and to commit ourselves to working for freedom, justice and peace in our world.
We were delighted to welcome Rev’d Nicholas Mercer, Rector of Bolton Priory, to preach. As a member of the armed forces, Nicholas was on active service in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus and Germany. Following his ordination, he was Rector of the Falkland Islands, South Sandwich Islands and British Antarctica for several years.
More than 900 British and Argentine troops lost their lives in the conflict. Wreaths were laid in honour of the dead by the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, the High Sheriff of West Yorkshire and the Lord Mayor of Leeds.
