An illustrated talk by Professor Joyce Hill for Heritage Open Week
The Doomsday Book records that the small village of Leeds had a church and a priest. A bigger church replaced it on the same site but was pulled down in 1838 to make way for the Victorian Minster, which occupies the exact footprint of the medieval church, enlarged over the centuries. Professor Hill’s illustrated talk looks at the evidence for the Anglo-Saxon church and goes on examine Kirkstall Abbey and St John’s Adel, St John the Evangelist, and Holy Trinity Boar Lane, each with the distinctive architecture of their period. The talk ends with an invitation to join Prof Hill for a guided viewing of the Anglo-Saxon stone cross standing within the Minster – our surviving witness to that first place of worship in Leeds.
