Did you know we have national champions among us at the Minster?
The Ringing World National Youth Contest for under 18s brought together sixteen teams of young ringers from across the country for their annual contest in York last July. Four of our teenagers competed with the Yorkshire Tykes, making up half of the team who went on to win the competition!
At the prizegiving in St Paul’s Cathedral, it was wonderful to see the pride these young people take in their craft. They were presented with the Whitechapel Trophy, generously donated by The Whitechapel Bellfoundry, the oldest manufacturing company in the UK dating back to 1570, and the founders of Big Ben, the Royal Jubilee Bells, and the famous Bow Bells.
The highly skilled Leeds Minster Society of Change Ringers are a blessing to our worship at the Minster, and we’re grateful for their dedication and the joy they bring to our community as we serve the city.
The Minster team are set for more recognition as Deputy Ringing Master Matthew Pearson leads them into the prestigious 50th annual National 12 Bells Striking Contest. The qualifier contest will be held locally at St Mary’s Beverley for the first time ever this year on the 22nd March, where they will compete against teams from St Paul’s Cathedral, York Minster, Stockton on Tees, Melbourne, and the hosts in Beverley.
Just two teams will qualify for the finals at St Mary’s Redcliffe in Bristol this summer. We’re wishing them every success!
